This pass is situated in the Kargil district of Ladakh. Considered to be one of the most threatening passes globally, Zoji La is not the place for a Sunday drive. The road to the crest is hard-surfaced, meaning it is not constructed correctly and is unpaved. The highway is known as National Highway 1(NH 1). Apart from all this scary stuff, this mountain road pass is simply breathtaking. The view along the way is astonishing, something like you've never experienced before. Located in the Himalayas mountain range, the long and zigzag road offers an unforgettable experience that challenges you and puts your riding/driving skills to the test. \n\nThe road is 25.8 Kilometers long. The road is so narrow that only a car can fit through, and heavy vehicles find it difficult to move due to narrow width. This road is a critical link between Ladakh and Kashmir. It is highly recommended to check the road conditions before departing. \nPeople often prefer driving a 4WD due to the uneven surface. The road on top of the pass is termed as the gateway to Ladakh. Gangabal is a gorgeous lake inhabited by several species of fish, including brown trout. You can get captivating views from the Zaj Pass. One part of the lake opens to luxuriant meadows while the other is overlooked by the sky-touching mountains covered by lively clouds. These heavenly scenes make the lake exceptionally beautiful. The dazzling beauty of the surrounding is jaw-dropping. The breathtaking views are going to freeze you completely. Tourists can enjoy fishing upon their arrival at the lake. \nThe clear water of the lake makes it easier for people to catch fish. You can spend an ample amount of time in this beautiful vicinity and enjoy the moment. Horse riding is also a good option for tourists to have fun alongside the beauty of Gangabal Lake. Gangabal is a significantly less explored destination but is amongst the most attractive places in Kashmir. This place is not accessible via road. It would help if you trekked all the way to reach the goal. Srinagar is both the commencing and endpoints of the trek to Gangabal, which takes eight days to finish. The walk starts from the capital city Srinagar, cutting and crossing Sonamarg, Nichinai, Krishansar, and Dubta Pani. One finally reaches the serene Gangabal Lake. The trekking route passes through many scenic places, and one would be particularly bewildered by the sight of Himalayan wildlife and fantastic flora. The ideal season is from March to November. \n\nGadsar Lake- Located in the Himalayan Mountain ranges, Gadsar Lake is a high alpine lake known for its surreal beauty. The lake is 0.85 kilometers long and 0.76 kilometers wide and is on the outskirts of Sonamarg. The lake is situated at an elevation of 5000 meters above sea level. The name of this new water body translates to "The lake of Fish," which is evident because of its trout fish population. It makes the site worth watching and spending time at this serene location. The lake remains frozen and gets covered with a crystal-like sheet of ice during winters. \n\nThe site is considered a popular trekking base and trout fishing center, which is why it is an integral part of the tourism of Sonamarg. The water body is located 108 kilometers northeast of Srinagar city. You have many things to enjoy while being in the region—the first being Angling, which is a prevalent pastime at Gadsar Lake. Sightseeing and photography are the following two significant things to do at the lake. There are a couple of ways to reach the lake. The first one is hiring a private vehicle from Srinagar to Naranag via Ganderbal, a total distance of 45 Kilometers. From there, you will have to trek for about 15 Kilometers towards the lake. The other option is a trek of about 25 Kilometers which starts from Sonamarg itself and goes through Vishansar lake. This route goes past the Nichinai pass. The best time to visit the lake is from June to September, as the weather is pleasant and favorable for trekking and sightseeing.\n\nVishansar Lake- The lake is a high-altitude oligotrophic lake. Such lakes are relatively poor in plant nutrients but contain an abundant amount of oxygen in the deeper parts. This lake is situated in the neighborhood of Sonamarg at an elevation of 3710 meters. Its maximum length is 1 Kilometer, and its full width is 0.6 Kilometers. The lake is not accessible during the winter season as it freezes because the temperature drops too low. Luxuriant green meadows surround the lake in the summer season, where local herders graze sheep flocks. The lake, with its panoramic beauty, snow-clad mountains, and their canyon filled with small glaciers and the field around, with elevated flowers, is an attraction for the trekkers in the Kashmir valley. Vishansar lake is the origin of the Neelum River, which streams northwards up to Badoab and then westwards through Gerais. The lake is situated at a distance of 115 kilometers from Srinagar and 35 kilometers from Shitkadi Sonamarg. Vishansar Lake is accessible from Srinagar or Srinagar Airport, 80 kilometers by road. You will be taking the NH1D route up to Shitkadi village from where ponies can be hired to cover an alpine trek of 35 kilometers which will take one whole day of trekking. You will be crossing the Nichinai Pass, which is at an elevation of 4100 meters above sea level. If you are planning to visit then the best time is in June to September. The lake is completely frozen from December to April. Vishansar lake is blessed with immaculate natural beauty, which is the main reason why every photograph clicked here speaks of nature’s bliss.\n\nBaltal Valley- The beautiful Baltal Valley is snuggled along the banks of the Sindh River near Sonamarg. This valley sits on the foot of Zoji La- the high mountain pass in the Himalayas. The main reason behind so much popularity of this valley is that it is a vital camping site for devotees of the famous Amarnath Yatra. It lays out a shorter and alternate route to the sacred Amarnath cave, which is why many base camps are set up at this location. Rewarded with Sindh's streaming waters, lush greens, and traces of snow, this valley is considered a paradise for nature lovers. \n\nThe panoramic view of the distant mountains covered with snow is simply a treat to the eyes. The high-alpine Satsaran Pass makes for an apt photography venue. The very majestic Satsar Lake is also visible from here. Tourists can capture photos of the same. Tourists come to this location in vast amounts because of the magnificent view from the top, and it is also very adventurous, which catches the eye of every visitor. \n\nKrishansar Lake- The krishansar lake is a high-altitude oligotrophic lake situated in Sonamarg. Less than a kilometer from Vishansar Lake. It is located at an elevation of 3710 meters northwestwards from Vishansar Lake, having a length of 0.95 kilometers and maximum width of 0.6 kilometers. Krishansar in Sanskrit means "The lake of Krishna." It is home to a variety of fishes, among which is the brown trout. During the winter season, the lake freezes completely and is inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. The area is surrounded by grasslands which attract local shepherds who graze their flocks of sheep and goats during summer. The krishansar lake is by the side of Vishansar lake. Behind it are the enormous mountains standing a tall entirely covered in the snow in which lies the Gadsar Pass, a mountain pass that leads to another beautiful location, the Gadsar Lake. The lake is a significant trekking site just in the northern part of the Kashmir valley. The melting of snow and glaciers mainly feeds it. It outflows through a small stream that falls into the Vishansar lake and gives rise Neelum River. The lake is located at 115 kilometers northeast of Srinagar and 35 kilometers from Shitkadi Sonamarg. \n\nIt is accessible from Srinagar or Srinagar Airport. Visitors can take snaps of the snow-capped mountains, alpine and sparkling water of the lake. \n\nSatsar Lake- The satsar lake consists of seven small elevated lakes in the Kashmir valley, in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. The lakes are in a tapered aerial valley stretching from north to south and laid out over 4 kilometers with a width of 1 kilometer. It also serves as a natural mountain pass in the middle of Tulail valley and Sind valley. The Satsar lakes are surrounded by luxuriant green pastures, home to herders during summer, and serve as a tourist camping site. Naranag is the nearest place where you can find accommodation, and it also serves as the base camp for trekking to the lake in summer. In winter, it is covered with heavy snow just like all the other lakes in that region, making it inaccessible. In summer, a sheet of mountainous flowers surrounds the lake's basin; the geum, blue poppy, potentilla, and gentian are almost expected. Trout fishes can be found in all the seven lakes in good quantity, predominantly brown trout. Tourists can reach Satsar lake from Srinagar via a 65-kilometer motorable road that surpasses Ganderbal and Way to the Naranag base camp. Another option is from Chattergul village, 10 kilometers westwards of Naranag, which leads through the meadows of Mahlish.\n\n The lake can also be reached through Bandipora, a 6-day trek, Arin's starting point. Tourists generally prefer to go via the Naranag trek route and return through Gadsar Lake, Vishansar Lake, and Sonamarg to cover the most elevated lakes of the region. The lake is only accessible during summers as in winter, all the treks leading to this place experience heavy snowfall. Satsar lake, along with its pristine surroundings, provides a perfect backdrop for photographs. The radiant flowers and lush green meadows surrounding the lake ensure that every snap is spectacular. \n\nNichnai Pass- Nichnai pass is a heaven for all trek lovers and is at an elevation of 4139 meters above sea level. Nichnai's pass path leads to the trekking routes reaching Gadsar Lake, Krishansar Lake, Vishansar Lake, and Gangabal Lake. Located at 4100 meters above sea level, the pass is the foundation point of the panoramic journey to these pristine lakes. The majestic view of the lakes begins from the scenic view of the pass. This pleasing trekking route sets the feeling of admiration for nature's artistry which gets carried and ever increased with the ensuing trekking towards the lakes. After the walk, one must cross the glacial stream and move across the right side of the mountain. You will be lucky enough if the flow and water level are low, and you can paddle through the water with relative ease. \n \nThe path to the top is in a straight line. Make sure you carry all the essentials required for you on the trek, along with your camping gear and proper clothing. A good camera with all the necessary equipment must capture all the beautiful scenery across the pass. The pass can be accessed only during summer so that you can enjoy every moment to the fullest.
